Catherine DeWitt began framing in 1983 while working in her parent's craft and hobby store. In 1992 she received CPF designation (Certified Picture Framer) from the PPFA (Professional Picture Framer's Association) after passing a comprehensive test on the care, handling, and framing of textiles, three-dimensional art, and works of art on various supports. Meanwhile, she also studied art in Rome, and in L.A. at the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design.
Catherine continued working as a framer and frame shop manager until 1999, when she finally hung her own sign in front of a cute little shop in Freeland, Washington. Her independent enterprise outgrew her available space almost immediately, and in 2001 she moved just down the road to her current location in the Freeland Professional Center.
Catherine regularly attends trade conventions and continues to study the framing of the past as well as the future. She is by nature keen on challenge, having framed everything from a whale bone to a dog tag, and there have been a heap of paintings and a veritable jungle of family trees in between. Catherine's practical knowledge of materials and methods combine with thoughtful designs based on the unique nature of each piece, and the result has been consistent excellence.
Catherine M. DeWitt Custom Picture Framing has been recognized every year since 2003 as one of the top 100 frame shops in the country by the editors of Decor Magazine. Decor's Top 100 Art and Framing Retailers Award is designed to recognize the most successful retailers in the art and framing industry. Catherine's shop was chosen in the Retail Aesthetics & Design category, awarded to the frame shop/gallery with the most beautiful, well-planned art and framing space.
